NatSteel Employees' Union was formed in 1984
Subsequent to the restructuring of Pioneer Industry Employees Union, employees of National Iron and Steel Mills became a branch of MIWU which encompassed organized labour in industries linked together with metal working back-ground. The occasion became conducive, for the formation of a house union in National Iron, and with this in mind a working committee, under the auspices and support of NTUC was set up to ascertain and evaluate the issues of House union. Responses were favorable and subsequently a pro-tem committee was established. Our union is named as National Iron and Steel Mills Employees Union and on record it was the second MIWU Branch to be registered with the Registrar of Trade Unions on 17 February 1984. The inaugural delegates' Conference was convened on 17 April 1984 at National Iron Premises to elect members of the new Executive Council. The late Secretary General of NTUC, Mr Ong Teng Cheong, officiated the opening ceremony. NISM Employees union was changed to NatSteel Employees' union in 1990 after the company changed its name from NISM to NatSteel Ltd. It is currently one of the 60 trade unions affiliated to NTUC.
